Hi Brian,
interesting quotes. In my www perusing, I have found that many of the Christians who are geeked because AI contestants sang STTL, are excited because they seem to look at Christianity as an activist movement--and so, they are excited when <i>any</i> "positive" stuff happens, or they are angry that important things get left out--like Jesus words, etc. The inconsistency is too clear to point out.

It is an interesting to note that in Acts 16, Paul becomes "annoyed" by the true statements of the demon-possessed slave-girl. His annoyance works in line with the purpose of God, and God releases her from demon possession. Perhaps there is a pattern here? When we come in contact with those who would speak some element of truth about God, but they do so for wrong reasons, and from an unbelieving heart, perhaps we should do our best to reveal the power of God to them--our rejoicing or our sorrow would be dependent upon what they did with God's powerful gospel.

Somewhat of an aside--and part of my quirky mind:
IMHO, the people who are either "upset" or "elated" for the reasons Josh mentioned above are often the same type of people who said "Yeah, that Kathy Griffin owes us an apology for her Emmy comments"--similar to this: ('http://www.miracletheater.com/theatertakesstand.html'). Instead of confronting Kathy Griffin with the power of the Gospel of God, they wanted her to apologize to the Christian victim rights board--I'm not sure who heads that up (perhaps Paul Crouch Jr.--see miracletheater's website). When, what she needed to do was to turn in faith & repentance to Christ--which would be apology enough...

Maybe if Chris Sligh had been singing this...oh that was the other season...

Hey, I know you will probaby frown on me or whatever, but I am a non believer, but I just thought I would leave you all a comment. I intend on travelling to Manchester to see the Body Worlds exhibition and I just found it nice the way some of you described the body in terms of God creating it! I know from my studies (I am a Biochemist) that the body is a VERY complicated machine and is a marvel in it's own right!! My best friend who is a very strong believer in God is coming with me, he is a Med student, and he is always trying to help me see God! But I am happy in the kowledge that I am a good person and that even though I am a non believer that (as my friend says) God will not judge me (if it's all true) on the Day of reckoning.. Do you all agree? Please dont just disregard my comment as just another ignorant comment about the non existance of God, but look at it from my perspective, My mam died when I was 15 and all my life I have grown up in a bad area, perhaps the worst in Europe! But I have come out of it and Im nearly qualified and Im out of the rut, but no thanks (personally) to any God, but to my own perserverance and hard work! I hope you get this and respond via email if you can.. Many thanks and I hope you all have a glorious day!

I guess this is where some individuals begin the ethnic diversification vs. cultural diversification argument. In other words, ethnic styles and amalgamation of them into the church is biblical; however, ethnicity and culture are not the same because a culture can contain sinful elements. Therefore, one must determine if the practice he is about to bring into the church is just part of the ethnic group he is dealing with (e.g. African church music vs. American Fundamental Baptist Church Music) or if the the element is a part of their culture that they, themselves avoid or are cautious about because they believe it to be sinful (i.e. Most conservative pastors in the African continent will tell you that they know a line not to cross in their worship services because there are certain elements of their cultural music that they do not want in their churches).

I have heard this argument proposed lately and I was wondering if you had heard it before and what you thought about it or even if it applies to the topic at hand. Thanks!

I felt the way that I feel every time "Amazing Grace" is sung in the secular public.

While the truth of the song always resonates with hearts that have experienced grace, it cannot alone warm hearts that are not already inclined toward God.
At least it hasn't for the past two hundred years.

Thanks for posting.

Great message! I enjoyed how you addressed some very relevant concerns and causes for stress and dissatisfaction and then narrowed the focus to personal struggles and dissatisfactions in the introduction. The idea of struggling with God's sovereignty resonated well with me this week. I often find myself struggling with God's sovereignty in my life, not insofar as I doubt the empirical/theological sovereignty of God (i.e. God knows my struggle), but I often find my self doubting the emotional/personal sovereignty of God (i.e. God cares and will act in my behalf). I don't know how many times I have told people, "God knows exactly what you are going through right now" or "God is using this in your life" and found that it had little to no effect on them. I find that most Christians don't really doubt that God is sovereign in the sense that He controls all things and is working in our lives, but most Christians question God's love in His sovereignty. In other words, I rarely find myself asking "CAN God lead me through this valley" and more often find myself asking "WILL He lead me through this valley?" Jesus confronted this struggle on many occasions. On one occasion, when teaching concerning prayer, Christ told his disciple to pray, not because God can answer prayer, but because God wants to answer prayer ("Which of you, if your child asks for bread will give to him a stone...?"). The same goes for the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. The widow does not question the judge's sovereignty or ability to grant the request, she, rather, doubts the judge's love and goodness. In summary Jesus indicates that if this evil judge will answer a persistent petitioner, how much more a good God? Jeremiah (29:11-14) does not question if God COULD deliver Israel from captivity, but if He WOULD. Our struggle with God's sovereignty seems to be rooted in doubts of God's loving and caring character. My personal struggle with biblical contentment is often a battle to reclaim the belief in the goodness of God while maintaining the greatness of God, His sovereignty tempered with His love. Thanks for your reminder to find my satisfaction in Christ this week and to reject the unholy thoughts of dissatisfaction in what our God provides!

PS - Sorry about all the random thoughts...just me using some personal growth lessons in my life recently along with the applications in your sermon and how they applied to me. Keep up the great work!

Good reminder. My wife and I left our position in missions nearly five years ago. Since then we have been praying, hoping and faithfully serving in our local church. Our plan (emphasis on "our") was to be ministering on a different field within one year. God chose to lead us down a different path. While I wince whenever someone says it "Moses was in the desert 40 years"; how's that for encouragement? Moral - God chooses to do with us what he will; stay faithful all the way!

This post was excellent. I can't tell you how many "Christians" I've talked with who "thought" they were saved, because they could remember saying a prayer, only to realize later that they had never repented of their sins and placed their faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Bad word choice can be dangerous.

Brian,
Yes, waiting is never easy-I just learned my mother is now number 8 from the top of the list to get in a nursing home near where I live; she was number 40 so that is progress-I finally got real peace re. this as I submitted to His complete will for me and the future. The Lord knows, His timing is perfect-I continue to pray for all of you regarding His field of service and His time! The Lord is good, always! from Pat

Amen! God's leading in our lives is often so confusing, but God seems to always prepare us for the hurdles a little bit at a time. Fascinating that you should bring up this thought. My pastor recently preached a message on a similar topic that God has been using in my life. Check it out if you get a chance (http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=217081058180).

Brian,
Waiting is never easy; however, we know "...those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Isa.40:31 I continue to pray for you and your family-may the Lord give you wisdom, strength, and assure you of His presence daily as you stay in His perfect will. God bless you as you wait!
Brian:

Had no idea that you were moving on. Of course when we're out of the US I'm not up on a lot of things. I think it's wonderful that the Lord is leading you to the pastorate and pray He will use you in a great way for His glory.

What a wonderful lesson to learn, and probably one God will use in your life to help others later on. Know that our family here in Indy is praying for all of you!

Yes Brian, living by faith is wonderful. I can see from what you have written that God continues to mature your wisdom in trusting in Him. One reason I choose Proverbs 3:5-6 as my life's verse is because early on in our ministry we have learned that God makes no mistakes, so why trust in ourselves or anyother, but God. We'll continue to pray that God will show you very clearly His will as He opens the doors of ministry to you. Love Dad

I have heard that Jay and Josh and Jerry (imagine that combination)are having a great learning time at 9 Marks Conference in D.C. They are learning about elders and hearing/observing 9 Marks philosophy of elders. Maybe when they get back, you could pick their brains about what they learned. One of the things they did was to observe during a 5 hour elder meeting (I thought ours were long!) Another thing was that they watched a 3 hour accountability meeting with their intern. I've never had that kind of acct. in my life much less as a college kid. Anyway, you might be able to skim some cream off their full cup.

I just recently read part III and found these other parts. Having left a very, very conservative ministry a few years back and church, in Greenville, SC, I have found the music in most churches is very different.

For the first time I have been exposed to what most would call a blend of traditional and CCM music. I had to study this out for myself as I was exposed to not just the music, but other believers who actually love God, but who see music differently than I was raised.

I appreciate your honest look at the 'beat' of music because for years I was taught much of what you shared.

After all my research and reading, I feel similiarly to what you have shared. While most Rock music is not what I would consider acceptable, and while a lot of CCM music I do not accept for myself, I no longer can just write a blank check and write them all off.

Life just isn't so black and white and there are good Godly Christians who see things differently. I appeciate your honest look. I

If we as believers were more honest with the scriptures and hence we would end up being more consistent, the world perhaps would be more drawn to the Gospel message. Unfortunately, much of our do's and don't's are not consistent in the light of scripture and the world sees that and discounts the what is so clear in the Word.

Best wishes.

This is indeed a move of faith and trust on your part. I am praying for you and the family that you will know the steps and stops of the Lord in this new venture. We love your parents, and are blessed by their ministry here in Ontario-many blessings to you and your family. God keep you in His perfect will. From Pat Beach

Brian,

Blessings on you and your family bro. Will be praying this week for the Pastor Heinze and the family at Red Rocks. You are signing up for a fantastic journey. There is nothing like the ministry of a pastor-teacher, a first among equals. The challenges are larger than life. The rewards are out of this universe! Call me anytime if you want to chat about "life on the other side." :)

Straight Ahead!
Phil 3:12-14
